I'm gonna have my say in a music critic stylee-its just easier to put what I think across in that sorta format-
Bemusics EP opens up with a song based around a blues motif, but, for this listener, its after the opening track has come and gone that we truly enter the Alice in Wonderland wormhole of Bemusic, and what a wonderful world it is.
If music were a butterfly, or a walk in the woods in Autumn, it'd probably sound like this.I'm not ashamed to say I listened to Falling with watery eyes, because for me its about watching my mum depart with her Alzheimers.Of course theres a skill in writing lyrics that the listener can interpret in their own way and thats quite in evidence here.
After the exquisite gentle pain of Falling things take on a decidedly African twist in Spring Song. One expects it to be an out and out jolly romp with its unassumingly optimistic title, and musically it is.Lyrically it reveals, perhaps, the singers cautious, genteel approach to life, especially the last two lines-"dont know where I'm going, so I'll just take my time."
Being the kind of person thats never happier than when he's miserable, this listener delights in the melancholy 'Long Way Home'.The softly picked cbg,the ethereal vocal-and here is what makes Bemusic special-it fills ones soul with a distinct sense of Britishness-Scarborough Fair, rainy afternoons, grey skies,a faded union jack, autumn leaves,a sense of history, almost monastic, certainly choir like vocals.Wonderful stuff.
And so to "how it Ends'- as soon as the vocal opens you know its going to be great.Everything that makes Bemusic special can be found here-the open to interpretation lyrics, the understated playing, the raindrop like glockenspeil accents.-the truly gorgeous (and distinctly unaverage!) vocal/harmony work,..so treat yourself and enter the world of Bemusic..no need to knock-she knows you're coming..
'If You're Not Listening,Thats OK ep'-A gentle triumph.
thanks Petey, Furry, Darren, Col and Diane!!
Col, yep it's me on harmonica...never really played it before but the song seemed to be asking for it. Luckily it was only asking for something VERY simple, lol!!
Petey, I'll answer all your questions tomorrow when I have a bit more time : -)
