I thought this might spur some inspiration for some folks cuz it's really similar to a CBG.BTW, I'm not 100% recovered yet, but I am feeling a bit better so I decided to unbox this package. It's my first time playing a Tanpura, so I don't claim to be an expert. This is an inexpensive 4-string box Tanpura made in India and sold on eBay. It is not a high quality instrument by any means. These are typically tuned Root - octave - octave - fifth.

After lots of searching I have worked out how this thing can be utilised for western music! I`m definitely going to build one now just to be able to make some strange, eerie tones, when playing along with mates. It`s more or less like a harp but, of course, not so many notes but as long as you`re in the right key it`ll sound good...well at least different!

History always repeats AD. Again and again. LOL. I definitely think the bridge is the most difficult part. Other than that... the design is pretty simple.
Hi there Kale its fun to see how history is repeating it self when i read your piece on the Box Tumpura,it reminds me off a fjew years ago i did a piece on the chicorie Bridge on a CBG to get the sitar effect ,if im not mistaken AGP# did a follow up on that by building one to, in the quest for sound ,we all travel along the same roads apperently ! just so you know ! here are some pictures!
Thanks Doug, t-belly, and AGP. I'm glad this one got some creative juices flowing. That was what I hoped for. We may see a surge of tanpura videos soon. LOL. And you are correct Doug. I'm constantly learning about new string instruments from different countries.
Well that was off the beaten track Kale. Very interesting! I was amazed at all the various stringed instruments from around the world at the Music Instrument Museum in Phoenix. I saw the lollipop version there, but don’t remember this one. Well worth the visit, but it did not take long to be overwhelmed by the sheer quantity of instruments to take in.

I`ve already priced a Tanpura bridge as this seems to be the most important piece of the build ( judging by the build quality)
Thoman UK do them for less than £10, $13/14. A set of 4 strings are just £ 6, $8 !
So I`m guessing you can build a decent Tanpura for around £25...$34 !
Got to be worth a dabble I think ;)
