Tried it plugged in this morning & zilch!

I guess it's the Chinese pickups/pot/jack socket. (My soldering's usually ok.)

In frustration I've just ordered a pre-wired Brit set-up.

It was only about £2 dearer than the Chinese one. Lesson learned!
