I found out the hard way that butternut has a tendency to split along the grain when carving. So if you're carving or whittling this wood . . . BE CAREFUL . . . and go slow. Friend of mine owns a lumber mill and found two 2" x 8" x 8' planks aged about 8 years. I'll be making many more CBG necks necks with it in the future.
Nice. Also known as white walnut. Like walnuts the nuts are said to be tasty. Butternut woodis light in weight and takes polish well, and is highly rot resistant, but is much softer than black walnutwood. Oiled, the grain of thewoodusually shows much light. It is often used to make furniture, and is a favorite of woodcarvers.
