Here's a side shot of the Gretsch style "zero fret" setup I did on my latest built. The white "nut" just keeps the strings in place from side to side - they all rest on the fret just in front of the nut and that becomes the starting point for the fret calculations. In addition to being very easy to build - no need to cut slots in the nut that are just the right width and depth - it also sounds great. Since an open string is resting on the same material as a fretted note, the tone of all notes on the guitar are identical. Very cool!
