THat looks so familiar to me because thats the way I built my mtn fretless banjos, because it works , its cheap to do and its close to the old traditional way of doing it.
Mostly because its CHEAP though LOL
What I did was add a long wood screw ( drywall type) directly under the dowel rod to take any strain that the dowel isnt able to handle and it gave me an added way to fine tune the neck after installation.
I say "under" but in your picture it would be just OVER the dowel rod.
