I also find with the harbor freight saw if you cut till no light shows under the blade, the depth is just right too.
Like the depth guide, good idea!
I did this same thing with the Harbor Freight saw and have had great luck with it.

I put the fretboard in the miter box and hold the back side of the saw (nothing glued to that side) against the end of it (the miter box). Keeps the cuts straight and perpendicular. Makes fretting fast and painless.
