This is actually Mother of Pearl Inlay and yes it is a tedious process but well worth it if you ask me. I do use some decals but working my way away from using them in most instances,
Hey, I love decals. I wanted to get into inlay and I found a Youtube vid from a guy who does amazing inlay on neck etc. and it was him talking thru the process of making an elaborate inlay all the way up a neck. Unbelievably tedious process and when he said "So yeah, this should be finished in about a week" my reaction was "Screw that!"
