yes there are slots for the strings and the brass is a small retainer because the the head stock was a bit uneven in thickness and didn't get quite enough break angle over the nut
I like the look of the nut. Are their indentations in the nut for the strings to fit in? Is the little piece of brass above to keep the string from popping off the nut?
