You can't do that Dept.: Scarf Joint as 1st fret. Usually I would add another piece of wood above these. The wood I have as a fret board was too nice to cover up. I like to use a screw bolt as a zero fret. Reflective adhesive vinyl paper punch size for fret marker.

This was a long visualized repair actually - because the first head I glued on broke off when it hit the floor after being bumped off the bench in my workshop. I inevitably knock them around a bit while making them, using gravity. Toughens 'em up and weeds out the weak joints.
