  • It does the trick nicely! I really like how the bamboo matches the light wood grain on the neck.

For darker necks, I assume trying to do the same? i.e. colour match with something on the neck? It seems you're using brass frets, so I'm thinking brass rod should work well whichever hue the neck is.

  • Not finished but banged some wax on to see what it's look like.

Drilled a 3mm hole and glued in bamboo skewers before cutting and sanding.

It's subtle but will do the job on my darker necks - not sure how i'd do it one the lighter ones though:

  • Looking forward to it!

  • No problem. I've used the good old bamboo skewer technique on a dark neck I've just done so that make be the future. I'll post a pic when finished.
  • Estone:

Sorry for late answer. Haven't really had access to computer for a few days.

OK, I see. If you want to do the side colour thingie, I believe you'd have to go to extremes to make it look good, i.e. colour in the whole strip with like heave laquer or something. Anyhow, it does look really good the way it is!

Right. Watched the video. I have some rebuilding to do. Silly me, having separate instruments for fingering and sliding. I just assumed the limitations came from me being a shite musician. Thanks mate!

  • @Stefan Askernäs, i'm no expert but i don't think you need very high action to slide anyway.

Some on here may have more info but i'm pretty sure a few mil is all you need to slide so if you do lower the action you may be ok to play both ways. I don't have a problem using a slide on any i've made with low action (more by luck than skill).

Here's a link to a video i found really useful on string action by CBJ if you haven't already seen it:

  • Hi

I tried to stain a section last night on a neck but just looked like i drew it on with pen.

    Take a look at these:

  • @Estone Villan:Can't really see the sides in any of your pictures, but if you cover them up with strips- the strips themselves could perhaps be stained? Unsure. Not saying that you should or shouldn't of course. Just thinking loudly. Ah, why don't you post a picture so I know just what the heck I'm thinking about;)

@Uncle John: Unsure of this expression. Trying to translate it, I'm getting that you're giving me a double high five but you have at some time had an event with a band saw? In the ball park?

Or possibly, you're an awesome mutant with nine fingers on your picking hand. That rocks. I'll go with that one.

    @no one in particular:

bought new strings. The fatter one was sourced from a 150 years old piano, and not too nice on neither sound or fingers. Sounds pretty OK now. Having trouble with the glass slide making a heck of a "razzling" sound though. Sounds better when just fingered. Maybe I should forego the slide and lower the action instead? Any thoughts anyone?

  • High 9s.

  • Or I wonder whether I could just stain a tiny strip onto the bindings half way between the frets before I blue it all to the neck. Hmmmmmmm
