Thanks. The scale definition is the key in fish carvings, much like feather detail in birds. The better carvers
spend hours and hours burning in scale detail or feather detail and that is what makes a detailed carving much
more realistic than a smoothie. Airbrushing is another technique that requires a fair bit of practice.
Not too many carvers want to invest in the expense of compressors, 2-3 air brushes and the different paints
that are required for wildlife..especially fish. One of the fellow carvers managed to carve a half decent
trout but when it came to hand painting, it didn't turn out like he expected, even with my step by step
directions typed up. I volunteered to fix it up, by repainting it over again. Now he just has to add the
black spots.
