  • Well, it WAS just an experiment, and I fully meant to trash it if it didn't work, but now I'm all invested in it and I wanted to give it another chance.  (I am such a sucker for the underdog.) Plus, I liked the way the paint came out.  Black rubbed over purple.  I don't usually paint things, it is my least favorite thing to do.  If the fix doesn't work I'll make a wall-hanger out of it.  The lesson has been learned; use oak.

  • Good wishes, but you can always build another.   I think pine is fine IF you keep at least 3/4 inch through the box and better yet if you glue up a half inch or so combination heel joint and through the body strengthener  AND add a quarter inch fret board to the neck.  Good and strong then.

I like a light git, but I like em' strong.  I almost always reinforce cigar boxes too.

If I sound like Mr. Expert, well.....  One of my fave guitars is out in the shop right now and kind of on life support.   It was a big box pot lid resonator GDGB and played and sounded great for months.  Then the action (strings to fret board distance) kept creeping higher and higher.  It was 1 inch oak through the top with a heel that did not go clear through the box.   The neck did not seem to bow, but it moved.  :(

Now it has a 'doubled' oak neck through the box.  For various reasons, I ditched the pot lid.   With a new top and possibly a paint can reso --- I have hopes it will be good again.

PS: I like the panther print on the back of your box.

  • Well, it's back together.  Time will tell.306567300?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024

  • That should do it.  Hope so.

  • Failed experiment! The pine neck was too thin. The guitar was constantly out of tune, and the bend was getting very obvious. This is an aluminum brace I built for the under side of the neck. All that is left is to notch it into the box and see if it helps.
