Okay, I have successfully delaminated the fretboard. With the pieces apart and cleaned up it's clear that it's a straightness issue with the fretboard - the store board. So I'm sorry for having needlessly impugned my husband's cutting and sanding! His cut was fine!
So I've got it damp and clamped now in in hopes that I can improve the shape a little bit, but I think we're either in for a different fretboard or to use it upside down. Which would normally have been fine, but he'd already stained it. Hm.
