Poor man's ebony

An experiment in "dying" a maple fretboard with Sharpie's. It's not the best method, as the ink does not penetrate very deeply, and must be touched up after scuffing during fretting and other assembly.

I did this as well and put a light coat of clear over it and it worked really well and sealed the ink in. Got to love the Sharpie's
