This shows the wire running over the round nylon roller and between two flat plastic peices that act as gates. The gates are set to the same width as the spool so the wire can't run past the edges. I always turn it so the wire goes on at the top of the bobbin, but it may not make a difference either way. When I'm winding, I turn the crank with my left hand, and guide the wire with my right. As the plate is spinning, I slide the wire slowly back and forth between the gates, with my fingers between the felt-clamp tensioner and the nylon roller. I use felt to hold the wire. The green tape is holding down the end of the wire that started the coil, keeping it out of the way and undamaged.

Might work. On this one, there's a big nut and bolt under the middle of the pickup that holds the wheel on. The pickup magnet sticks to it just fine until it starts to spin.
Thanks Don , i'm on with making a PUP winder (well on and off ) i'm thinking of trying a steel backplate in hope i can just stick the pickup direct to the backplate , may work may not ?? lol!! i'll let you know !
