I cut a couple of rough neck blanks today out of scrap pine and basswood. One will become a tester. I may throw a box on it just to have it fun to play in itself. I've been wanting to try a crusty guitbox for fun. Crude and funky.
I picked at the corner with a chisel (little hammering and vice involved). then I started pulling the plates one at a time with needle nose pliers. It's difficult at first, but once you get a few the rest pull out much easier. its potted in something so the plates stick, but once you break that bond they slide out. There is a large wire coil and a small wire coil (over under). The large wile coil is garbage; toss it. The small wire coil is the good stuff.
Good tester! I've wondered how to test before stringing to figure out the right height of the pup and if the pup works and what it sounds like. So simple, so good, Thanks very much. Nice little pickup too!

My first homemade pickup from an old broken transformer and 2 button magnets. The didley-bo was thrown together to test the pickup. It worked.
