Two pieces of pine on either side of the box cut exactly as wide as the box, and the notches are exactly as wide as the neck. These help keep the neck from moving side to side. The middle brace makes up the gap between the neck and the bottom of the box, so when the CBG is completed, it's essentially solid wood from top to bottom.
