If I can't afford a bottle of Midleton Very Rare whiskey (not whisky) then at least I can cadge the very nice box it comes in. Inside I put am LM 386 amp and a set of 4" car speakers in parallel. The switch is for high or low gain. I may try different circuits for a cleaner sound. Videos to follow.

I would also like to try some other amp modules. I like the way the CBGITTY 2.5W Artec is pre-assembled but what to they sound like when cranked up? but The LM386 amps distort nicely but not all solid state amps do
thanks Pete. Yes the chip-amps I got are in fact LM386N-4.Think I'll buy 100 in case they go out of production. I did another one in a fudge tin with master volume and gain pots - played into a smallish amp which I use as a cab (6" speaker), it sounds killer. Currently fitting one in a tiny hexagonal box with a 2" speaker just for fun, Just enough room for a PP3 and a switched input jack and pins 1&8 hardwired together so its dirt or nothing. The next enclosure is a lovely Danish cookie (bought for the tin, cookies and all., delicious !) Still not a cigar box in sight but you never know - there's one in the house containing someone's pencils...
Nice work. I love me some amps. I love working with the LM386. If you get LM386N-4 you get 1 watt of output. If you put a pot off pins 1 and 8 you can control the gain. All the amps I build have master volume and gain.
Thanks all. I am reluctant to cut or drill the beautifully made hardwood box so mounting everything on the front panel. Theres not much room there so jack acts as a switch. Might add Power LED as Ive already left it on and drained battery. Also has DC power jack but my current power supply is very noisy.
I recommend the LM386 chip as it is really a fuzzbox and power amp in one. Look up Smokey Amp or Ruby Amp for info on the chip.
Not sure if I posted video link before. https://flic.kr/p/24cioiQ
I just looked at the price - no wonder you settled for the box. Very good use of something that may have gone to the recycling. I hope that the amp/speaker combo is as smooth as the whiskey, to be sure. With the box covers closed you can look smug when friends come around!
