I do have a background in art & design but a lot of it just comes down to experimenting with different techniques, practicing first on scrap pieces of wood and seeing what happens.
I have found the secret with vintage finishes is to build it up in layers. so with this one I applyed a coat of black ink allover then sanded areas back so the wood showed through then applyed a brown ink wash and sanded back again... continue till it looks right.
What is your background how did you get the idea and knowledge to pull off the vintage look that is so realistic that Stevesteve mentioned that Windsor castle must be missing a door. I agree. Have you done this type of thing before, thanks for explaining your technigue. It is one thing to learn how you did it and another to actually pull it off oneself, so it looks good, you are an artist!
