Marking out the fretboard

I am using a one piece Red Oak fretboard. I thought to mark it out using our old Dulcimer as a template, as it is all diatonic with a 27" VSL.I marked out all 17 frets, but I'm thinking I'll just do 14, as it will give me 2 complete octaves, and it will give me some room for a pickup...
