The interior is accessible through the back, a feature my luthier friend admired. I've put a piezo in it but have not plugged it in yet. I've tried tuning it open G but maybe this isn't the best tuning for a beginner?

I would suggest googling 2 finger mandolin chords. At least look at them. Key of G (chords G,C and D) are pretty easy finger positions. And yup, the open G could be good. If you can find it, there is a sawmill tuning that is an open G and pretty easy to play and kind of intuitive, especially if you already play open G cbgs.

In my opinion. slides are not so good for mandos.
