I messed up the box when I cut the f holes. So I ended up distressing the box then used a clear coat. I strung it with medium string the G, B, e and tuned to G. I was trying for a lower voice but it didn’t work. So now I’m going to get some lighter strings and used the A, D, G and tune to G and see how that works. I need a lesson on stringing these things.

  • I often use the loop end banjo strings. Or i just get the gauge string i want in ball end guitar strings. After many builds and old guitar rehabs I've accumulated many extra strings to fool around with.
  • Do we have a group discussion on “String Theory”? I like the idea of using banjo strings. As a new builder or blunderer the help here has been priceless.

  • I'm with Muddy, nice patina. I've had trouble stringing with thick low strings myself. I wind up with tenor banjo strings pretty much. They work good for me. Like an 11, 18 and 27. GDG or DAD. Nice looking f holes there. Bet it sounds good.
  • Love this look!
  • I use the A D G strings and tune to G. I tried the same thing you did and wasn't happy with it either. You could also use the same set to tune to A E A. But probably only if you need to harmonize with someone else.
