Yeah, I thought of the fork too. I was thinking one of those wide serving or salad serving ones. I also thought of going around to antique shops and looking for odd sterling silver, like maybe a pie server? Post photos if you do it.
I'm thinking of using a fork for my next build....with the tines twisted / looped to hold the strings. I'll make sure I pick one with a good solid wide stem so as to avoid your tuning problems.
Congrats again on the build. It really looks terrific!
Thanks, I was running through my head trying to think of things made of stainless, like spatulas, motorcycle fenders, dead appliances, and walked past silverware in the sink. Hmm...
It worked out okay, I would do it a little differently next time. The holes for the strings need to be closer to the top of the box, and the narrow stem must twist slightly as you tension the strings--so you have to tune one way, and then back to check if they changed. A spoon with a wider stem/handle might remedy that--or 2 spoons with 2 strings per spoon.
