Titch - thanks for your feedback - the thought has crossed my mind to use nails, especially since I could hide the nail hole where a finger board dot might go. I have an issue where this is always some miniscule and barely noticable drift of the finger board regardless of how many clamps I use. Thanks again for your suggestion.
Almost as many clamps as I used to use. These days I use 2 thin nails hammered in to the fret slots at either end of the fret board, (before the frets go in obviously). Then I wrap the fretboard with some cut up bike inner tube, though any strong elastic like surgical tubing will suffice.
