I know that when I built a kayak that I read about people using rice paper for images that'd go on boats under the fiberglass but hiding the edges is the problem. The water slides are good but you don't have a choice of images...like your own. There's the Mod Podge method you should look at. Not sure if it's in jet prints or laser jet prints used...though the ink jet is water based so it may be the latter. I saw a couple YouTube things about pictures onto wood using the Mod Podge and Elmers glue. Seems like a good way to go. Check it out. I'm having my wife silk screen images on boxes one of these days. She teaches it and has access to the equipment.
The Pinup is a waterslide decal I found online. Easy to apply and reposition. I used one before and mistakenly tried to finish the wood after the application...that was just silly. The decal blocked the pre stain sealer and then also the tung oil so the underside where the decal was remained lighter. I was afraid that if I did the oil first that the waterslide would not adhere. This box was cleaned and then lacquered first, the decal applied, then a bit more lacquer to seal it. The decal comes on an oversized sheet. It works best if you trim close around the image since at some angles to the light, you will see the decal edges. The waterslides also come two ways; opaque and clear. Opaque, of course, blocks the wood and just looks like a sticker or magazine cutout. The other lets the wood be seen through but the image darkens.
