Finally got the hurdy fiddle strung and singing. Added a (very bad) sound video/sound clip. Used the "C" string and the "E" string from a ukulele and tuned them to low G and D. I am surprised at how slowly you can turn the wheel and make this thing sing! It does help to figure a way to strap it to yourself or hold it down while you crank though.
I have found that you can lay it on your lap and fret the strings like a lap steel and it works pretty well.
I believe this would sound might nice in the hands of a fiddler who knew their way around a one of these critter.
The mechanism is really not that difficult if you want to keep it simple. I just couldn't help myself and went a little overboard. You can see the very simple way the Dennis Havlena did it right here :
I think he made his for like $5 or something ridiculous. I'd love to see what other folks (and good players!) could come up with on this unique little instrument!
That's pretty neat Gene. I don't know if I could play one of those, it's kinda like trying to rub your tummy and pat your head at the same time. Thanks for sharing the video.
