Yup, still lovin' the walnut. The little "eye" on the top of the headstock was pretty lucky. I am still amazed by how you can take a basically boring stick, shape it, and all these awesome grain patterns reveal themselves to you.

Yup, I've seen it that way as long as I've been carving and working with wood, that's been since I was about 9 or 10 years old, I'm 61 now and still like you, amazed at what comes out of the wood.
Here's a walking stick I did for my better half Tiff out of Maple that you probably can appreciate.
