    I play open d on my lap steel but on 4/3 string open g is the best imho.

    Nice and one of my favorite tunings.   William do you know the simple finger chords?   The 2 finger, G, F, Am and one finger Em   ?   Great versatile tuning.   I play some key of C and D stuff on them too.   (Just trying to help you get a toe hold on the tuning.)
