The 35 degree does not take away any wood. I was wondering if the 45 degree would mess up the wood. Thanks for your comment Suspect, May save the 45 degree test for when I don't have anything to do, if that ever happens.
I made a couple of beveling files the same way. They work great. Some people even laminate a piece of teflon or polymer along the heel. I use the 35-degree one that I made all the time. I had the same idea about the 45-degree, but after making one and trying it out on a couple of fboards, I found that I really preferred the 35-degree. But yeah, they only take a couple of minutes to make, so give it a shot, the 45 might work for you.

Does it take any wood away from the edge of the neck?

35, but have been thinking 45 might work a little better. Planning on trying it. (it's easy to make one).
Brilliant!
