I used superglue to seal that deep rough grain. Spread superglue with plastic card, scrape down with cabinet scraper (sharpen scraper well first). Results in wonderfully hard, smooth surface. Can no longer feel grain when running fingernail across it.

Thanks - most certainly not an original idea. I read about it on some luthier's blog, he described using superglue to fill a rough grained soundboard. It was so different than my experience with always trying to limit the superglue!
As for not getting glued to the board, I still remember what happened when I was about 8 and building a balsa glider, tried biting off the chunk of superglue that had plugged the tip of the bottle. You can guess the rest :)
