Fiddlestick WIth Flatpup

The Flatpup is now fitted properly on 4 little legs. You may notice the switch to select the Flatup direct to the jack, or the piezos. A trial of my 'multi volume pot' scheme failed. It was way beyond my level of competence with wiring !

  • Had to come check this baby out after seen bemuzic playing this. She plays it well and from what I hear through these head phones, sounds really nice. Got an interest in the flat pup you installed. Curious how you feed the neck through the body. Is it straight through or block mounted?

  • Thanks Bluesheart - it's been a challenge !

  • Thanks August - I was inspired to make it by Jamie Howe's Dulcilin, which is a lovely instrument.

Yes, I left the sound post out. Partly because I'd be taking the back off but also because, in a violin, the sound post transmits vibration from the front to the back, amplifying the sound. As the back of the guitar will be against my body I was worried that the sound post would act in reverse and damp the vibration of the front, reducing the sound.

It's 24-inch scale, with a neck that tapers from 42mm at the body to 34mm at the nut. Strings are 16/24/32 gauge out of a set of Deacon EG9 electric Hotwires. They are spaced 13mm at the tail, 11.5mm at the nut and grounded through the tailpiece.

  • Awesome idea! I guess you did away with the sound post seeing how you will be removing the back from the violin a lot. What scale did you use for this/what strings?

  • Awesome!!!

  • Thanks for the comments. I might try a single blend pot for the rod piezo and the Flatpup. At the moment, the blend pot mixes the 2 piezos and the Flatpup is wired straight to the jack. The switch selects piezos or Flatpup. I'm not sure how useful blending the Flatpup with the piezos would be. They are very different sounds. The piezo sounds more like a 'traditional' CBG, while the Flatpup is a warm and mellow humbucker.

I posted a short video of a Flatpup sound check yesterday and a vid of the piezos a couple of days ago. I would post a link but my links never work - if you search for 'Fiddlestick' they should pop up. I'm really pleased with the way the guitar sounds.

  • looks fine!

  • sweet build, how's it sound?  did you consider a single blend pot?

  • Realy nice work realy !! But i always wondered if the pickup/piezo combination, is realy usefull ?? I personaly never mix it, and the scheme become to be hard !!
