Cigarbox Violin no 2 - Electric!

The second cigarbox violin is almost finished. For the finetuning of stringheights the help of a violinist is necessary. The handmade pear fingerboard is "scooped", approx. 1.5mm at the G string and less concave for the thinner ones.I'm curious how the magnetic Flatpup Humbucker will work - does it sound like on a guitar or does it transmit the scratching of the bow? - Let's see and hear..

  • Lovely.

  • too bad... I tried it amped and plucking worked fine. But it didn't work well with the bow, which acts just above the pickup... but it was worth trying it.

  • Cigarbox violin n°2 with magnetic Flatpup pickup.
The box is a "Partagas n°4". The neck, the fingerboard and the bridge are made of pear wood. Local pear, no rainforest was harmed to build this violin ;-)

Construction differences between n°1 and n°2:
    - Sound post: spruce (1), chopstick bamboo (2)
    - Lateral Bracing: top & bottom (1), no bottom bracing (2)
    - Fingerboard: beech (1), pear (2)
    - Bridge: thick and horizontal grain (1), thin and vertical grain

Sound comparison between n°1 and n°2:
By plucking it, n°2 sounds clear, while n°1 gives a slight "pluck". Looking forward to let them be tested by someone who can play.

  • Thanks Dave! I made a neck template in pdf, if you are inspired enough to try it, I would e-mail it to you..
