Down at the Crossroad: Guitar Tuning?

It is said in the ledgend, Robert handed his guitar to a man at the crossroad. He tuned it and played a tune. After that, Robert was able to play well. Did he tune the guitar into open tuning? Did he sell his soul to the Devil or did Papa Legba help him out?
