  • Just received a surprise gift in the mail from Dr. Jerry Goolsby of Lubbock, TX.  He is a great guitar builder, repairer of high-end guitars and musician.  He claims he is "a recovering musician!"  I can tell you.  He is much more than that!

It is tuned to EEBE using two treble strings (high E string and high B string), a tenor string (tuned to E on the D string) and a low bass string (bass E string tuned two octaves lower).  The range is very wide, allowing a slide player to add bass accents not normally available.  The tones that can be produced by this guitar are incredible.  It can produce both dark and bright tones.

The neck is roughly the size of a banjo. The idea was to have a four string neck that would allow a slide player room to move.  The neck of the guitar is a seven-ply neck. It has book-matched pieces of Maple, mahogany, and Cocobolo. The rotating pieces are very strong. The fingerboard is made of rosewood. The headstock on the top is made of a piece of wood found in the cigar box. The back is made of Cocobolo.  The fingerboard is made to Rosewood. The neck is pitched at a 4° angle.

The body has a solid piece of mahogany to which the neck is attached and fills about 4/5 of the cavity of the cigar box.  It has Grover tuners. It has two Stratocaster pick ups made by mighty mite. The cigar box essentially wraps around a solid body foundation. It has one volume and one tone control with a pickup selector switch.

I will bring the guitar to the Texas CBG Festival on 17 September in Albert, TX.  Anybody wanting to play it can try it out.  I am also trying to get Dr. Jerry to go with me to share his knowledge on guitar building as well as show off this guitar and explain on the thoughts behind the making of it.
