Thanks Bluesheart. The neck is plain oak, not reinforced. It's one inch thick old skirting board being scrapped on a building site. I didn't use a fingerboard and I don't have the skills or tools to slot a truss rod in the back. The neck is about 42mm wide at the nut to 55mm at the body and I kept the profile as square as possible, just rounding the edges off enough for playability.
It's been strung for 2 days. There's a very slight bend in the neck, which gives just the right amount of neck relief. We'll see if it stays stable - fingers crossed !
