Deertrax top

"Deertrax" is almost done! Needs a strap and a little more pizzazz but it lives and sings! Built as a slide guitar so it will only have fret markers when done. Might inlay some thin strips of wood for markers ? For now I'll just mark them on or burn them in. Made from a salad bowl with Bird's eye Maple neck, Oak heel. ...Mahogany Top... painted to enhance the banjo look. Hoof shaped sound holes were the inspiration for the name. Piezo pickup.

  • I really love the sound of this build, a really nice banjo ring to it, I'll hate to sell it!
  • I love this build!  I have a thrift shop salad bowl that's been sitting on a shelf for almost a year now. You've given me some solid inspiration to get it down and start cutting. Thanks!
  • Thanks Scott....I love how this one sounds too! Maybe if I can sell one of my other ones I could afford a camera that shoots video with sound, to post some clips?

  • Fantastic build Tracy... i love it!
  • No the top is glued to the bamboo strip and the bowl lip, it is all solid.
  • right, so the string's pressing on the bridge hold the top on,
  • I used some flat, narrow, bamboo strips from an old blind, and glued them around the inside rim of the bowl just below the top lip. It gave me a nice support all the way around for the top. There is actually a slight convex curve in the top for added strength and tone....seems to work good!
  • nice, i like it, how's the mahogany top held in the bowl,??
  • It was a round wooden Salad Bowl I got at the Thrift Shop for two bucks....I really like this one alot too!!!!
  • I like the round body on this one. How did you make it? Is it from some cheese box, or did you build it from scratch?
