The f-holes started out small and pretty, but the sound was closed and muffled. Once I opened them up, the tone filled in nicely, but the holes aren't as pretty.

I made a cardboard template, traced it, then drilled small holes where the four knobby ends are. I rough-cut the shapes by hand with a thin coping saw blade (no frame, just the blade and fingers) and sanded to the line with sanding sticks and small files. It took a while. When I had to make them bigger, I think I just kept sanding and filing beyond the lines, constantly checking to make sure they matched. Someone who's good with a jig saw could probably do it quickly.
