Thanks Mike! I made the string retainer from a piece of 1/8" brass rod from the local hardware store, and a pair of little ferrule/washers from brass "cup hooks" - also from the same hardware store. At first I was a little concerned about the string tension pulling it up out of the head. To stop that, I used a file to cut a couple grooves near each end of the brass rod and coated it with epoxy before pushing it into the wood. Seems to hold it all in place very tightly now.
Thanks! The fretboard is made from a piece of 1/8" x 24" lacewood I picked up at the local Woodcraft store. I was able to get two necks (one 4 string and one 3 string) out of the single piece. I finished all the wood including the cigar box with a couple coats of tung oil.
