  • Thanks Phil. Got it. Thanks for the info. Really nice work too!
  • That thing just OOZES class. Very Nice!
  • The angle makes sure there is enough string tension at the nut. Otherwise, you'll likely have a buzz. To make a scarf joint ... place a 1x2 on it's side ... make a mark from the top left corner down 6 inches to the other side. I made a jig for my table saw to do this, as everything needs to be steady. Once you make the cut, flip the short piece around, and glue it to the other side. Voila ... a scarf joint.

    The other way to do this is to screw a bar between the tuners and nut, and run the strings under it. Again ... you want to increase the tension in that area. If you are just starting, or short of tools, this may be the way to go. Look at the pics on CB Nation ... you'll find plenty of examples.
  • Is there a functional advantage to the angle? If so.. what's the angle of your cut to make the joint? I'm just starting on this venture and I don't want to over-complicate a pretty simple concept :)
  • Yes the headstock is angled back. I do this by making a scarf joint. I start with a 1x2 ... make the scarf joint glue together ...and then add wings to the outer edges. So the headstock actually ends up coming from 4 pieces of wood.
  • Is the neck / headstock a two-piece? The head looks like it's angled back a bit.
  • Yeah .. I'm liking the shells as well. Went to the Outer Banks of NC for vacation and brought back the usual bag of shells and have been using them. I'm getting short on good ones like this! Was thinking it could be my trademark, but I'm running short of shells up here in Wisconsin. Wish I had brought more home. Just simple shells look great once they are coated with Tung oil, or a coat of lacquer. Try it.
  • Cool use of shells! I have an overabundance of them since I live at the beach.... was wondering how I might put them to good use on my instruments.
  • I'm impressed, I love oak, WICKED nice job. (:>}
