I built a banjo using a cheap tamborine for the head, but it didn't work too well. Even with nylon strings, the head just wouldn't stand the tension; it kept collapsing. Did sound nice, though...
I should have gone with the hand=drum as Randy says; they tend to be more robust, and some are even adjustable.
I made a very nice- sounding banjo with a plywood head; used a piece of PVC sewer-drain pipe for the "pot" and glued 1/8" hardwood (baltic birch) plywood on. Sounds pretty decent.
