While building a fretless guitar for my wife I didn't want to burn or paint the lines and markers. I cut lines and markers and poured them with casting resin with purple powder and then sanded and polished them with the neck. It worked great. The next will be for me using brass powder for the metallic look.

Very nicely done! I've been thinking about putting some colored enamel wire in some fret grooves and sealing with resin. Got any tips about the resin and the application of it you would like to share?
Thanks Dave, I think that it may be something that I will expand upon. Lots of colors and different materials that can be mixed with the resin for the desired look. May try as some inlays on a box.
