The nut fits flush in a pocket I round rasped out for it. I went with a scarf joined headstock this time. I was more careful with the glue and clamping and it turned out better than my first attempt (on the ukulele in the background on which I've made less progress). Next time I might try moving the joint to the other side so the there's no break in the grain pattern.
