I put the handles on for a hand rest, like a dobro. But I've seen them on regular guitars too, there is a different sound resting your hand on the handle vs. resting your hand on the box but anyway that's why I do it.
As for my regular fretted guitars I usually leave the handle off so you can palm mute and get a little more intimate with the strings like you do on a regular guitar.
