Don't know if it helps. I found soldering tricky until I started using a separate flux. Although the solder is supposed to have flux in, putting flux paste on all the surfaces first means that the solder runs really well. Makes a huge difference. You can get a little tub of plumbers flux anywhere that sells plumbing stuff (DIY shops).
I have the same - but my board has no hole... but how big is your soldering iron?? I have some huge thing with no stand or thermostat. This is what I'm talking about...
What I can't understand is, I've heard some men say they can't do sewing as it's very fiddly and women (with smaller hands) are better suited to it. Well lots of men do electrical stuff and that's WAY MORE fiddley IMO!!!
