I usually do a natural finish, but this box was screaming for a black neck---minwax ebony stain on a maple neck with mahogany fretboard---gonna put a few coats of urethane on to finish it off---and the gold hardware should really look great!
The black neck finish is something I have wanting to do. Now I am more inspired ! I use Old Masters brand finishes, I found they are a really great product ( FYI)
