Big box twin 15 - Altec

I've had these Altec's for quite some time. They are 420Y's reconed to 421. Not the best for audio so I figured that I may as well give them a go for guitar. The twin 15 deal is admitted overkill but I figured what the heck. I'm not sure if it applies here but as the saying goes,.. go big or go home ;) The cab is an old one from Audio Crafter. Sounds pretty good closed back and series wired. I may try it without the back or wired in parallel somewhere down the road.

  • Thank ya BLC! 16 Ohm are sometimes a lot easier to work.  Configuring for 8 Ohm when possible is usually just a lot easier on amps whether they be tube or SS. That way, you can pretty much plug into anything and not worry about it.

I haven't figured out the sound/vid thing yet or even what gear I would need to pull that off.

  • Nice Ron, I'm expecting my 2nd driver this week to fill the 2x15 kustom cab I have. My drivers are 16 ohm, so I need to test 8 & 32 ohm sound combos. I have plenty of power, so tone is my goal now. Post a vid of that bad boy!!

  • It looks pretty good in the room anyway ;)306183295?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024

  • If you are lucky, they never do!

  • It sure sounds big even with only throwing a few watts at it. I sacrificed a bit of output and clean tone (from what I have read anyway) with the series wiring but output wasn't what I was going for. I'll have to rewire to parallel down the road to see what I like best. For now, I'm calling it done.

  • Now, THAT'S how you do it...wish Fender would make a twin 15 Bassman again...
  • Ha! 15's have the potential to move a lot of air if you want them to that's for sure. I decided to build it closed back after running some driver sims for that box volume. I wired them in series for 16 Ohm and only hitting them with 2-5w tube amp. My lovely bride is pretty tolerant of my hobbies. When she asked if I could build something that would be a little more furniture looking if I was going to keep something to plug into upstairs near the "guest zone", I obliged. She never mentioned anything about size ;)

  • Plenty of Uumph!!!
