Yes as I recall I did use a single brace on the (plywood) soundboard. It isn't very loud at all but sounds very much like a real upright. A proper tone wood soundboard would be a lot better, volume wise.
Lots of character Mathew! Got some good ideas from you so thanks for posting! I've been wanting to rebuild my washtub bass to be set up more like this one. I built mine using the metal bottom as the sound board. Works but not great. I suspect yours is louder!

Did you put any bracing under the sound board? I like the tail piece and bridge.
