I just got a fiddle like this for $14 at a local music shop. It was in a case and I thought the case was empty, but when I got to the counter I opened it up an lo and behold. My new fiddle. The neck lists to the side a bit, but she plays pretty good, better than I can. Looks like you got a great old case. Those shaped wooden cases clean up real nice. I've stripped or just sanded on mine and they come out beautiful. I use Mod Podge for gluing in new fabric. I'm tempted to make an instrument out of one of the cases. The arched top is a work of art.
If the banjo has a wooden resonator on the back, its just held in place by one screw in the center. If that's loose or worn out the resonator could spin. The resonator has some kind of pads that ride the pot of the banjo. If they are worn out or missing, the resonator could spin. Take it off and see.
