American Girl Lap Steel

Vintage American Girl ironing board. I've had this on the heap for a year or so. Acoustic sounds great with bone but and saddle. 18 inch scale. My 5 year old daughter and I built it in half an afternoon. All screws and no glue.

  • Thanks Uncle John!
  • Very nice!

  • My daughter put it in her lap and played a little before breakfast this morning.  I wasn't sure how the thick ironing board would resonate, but it is pretty loud.

As a test, I decided to set the nut and saddle in at a 15 degree angle to get a sharp point and not need to file slots for the strings.  I really like that for at least the saddle side.  I do have to file the nut a bit to lower the action or cut the neck groove a little bit deeper.  The action is too high to fret any notes, but it sounds good with a slide.

I'll go look for MaduroBob's ironing board.

  • No problem ED, actually I saw the one MaduroBob built for Justin Johnson and scaled mine down a little.  If you haven't seen the one Bob built go to his page and scope it out, a thing of beauty!

Quality time spent with your Daughter for sure ED!  :-)

  • Thanks for the inspiration Maddog.
